Chief Gary Blakes has been a resident of Prince George’s County, Maryland for nearly forty years. Prior to moving to Prince George’s County in 1979, Chief G. Blakes was born and raised in Washington, D.C. He received his education his in the Washington D.C. public school, where he received many honor. After graduating from Eastern High School in 1976, Chief Gary Blakes received a full academic scholarship to attend Catholic University of America.
Chief Blakes married Dr. Gybrilla “Gigi” Blakes in August1983. They have one Daughter, Ginnifer Blakes Minor, Who is married to Dorien Minor. They have blessed Chief and Doctor Blakes with two grand kids, Dorien and Asia. |
In 1988 Chief Blakes decided to follow his lifelong dream to serve and protect his community by joining the Glenarden police department. Chief Blakes spend nearly two years in Glenarden before taking a position with the Hyattsville police department in 1991. Of Chief Blakes’ many years in law enforcement, more than twenty years were spent with the Hyattsville City Police Department. In November 2007, after scoring the highest on the Department’s Lieutenants exam, Chief Blakes was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant and assigned to Command the agency’s newly formed Special Operations Division. He was also responsible for oversight and daily operations of the Criminal Investigation Division, Community Action and Emergency Response Teams. Within weeks of becoming a Lieutenant, Chief Blakes noticed that the Department needed to become more responsive to the quality of life issues concerning their citizens. This concern give birth to the agency’s first and successful Community Action Team (CAT). CAT was a group of Officers who primary responsibilities were to focus on the quality of life issues of the citizens of Hyattsville.
Prior to retiring 2010, Chief Blakes was reassigned to the Administrative Services Division, he was responsible for oversight of all civilian personnel assigned to communications, property, evidence, records, and parking enforcement. Chief Blakes was also responsible for the monitoring of all technology projects within the agency. This included installation of security cameras and emergency calls boxes throughout the City of Hyattsville and the reconstruction of a new communications center and Computer Aided Dispatcher.
In 2011 Chief Blakes accepted a temporary position with the Town of Capitol Heights to serve as the Chief of Police until a permanent Chief could be found. During his short time at Capitol Heights, Chief G. Blakes Implemented several programs, to included starting the first Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program in the region.
Chief G. Blakes is currently the Security Director at Bowie Town Center where he has instilled in his troops his lifelong policy “That Everyone is treated with Respect and Dignity”.
Chief Blakes education included attending Catholic University of America, The Prince George’s County Municipal Police Academy, The University of Maryland Institute for Advance Law Enforcement Studies, The Federal Bureau of Investigations Law Enforcement Executive Development School, Penn State Police Executive Development Programs, The Maryland Police Training Commission (MPTC) Administrator’s Supervisor Executive Training and he is an MPTC certified general instructor.
Chief Blakes has numerous awards, acknowledgements, and certificates of achievements to include a Governor’s Certificate for his work in Law enforcement. He has been recognized by his peers on numerous occasions and named Officer of the year by the Fraternal Order of Police; Chief Blakes was also named The Community Officer of the Year.
